As a 16 year old he couldn't get a game with West Footscray so he went to play at Braybrook where he was teaming with fellow greats Gary Merrington, Dennis Collins and Ivan Marsh.

Footscray

In his first game in 1963 he kicked 3 goals, playing against champion North Melbourne player Allen Aylett. He soon became the number one rover.  His main attributes were in being able to read  the game and to pass accurately to a team mate. He was never really quick but the speed lessons helped him over a short distance.  In 1968 he took sprint training lessons under coach Fergie Speakman from Essendon and that's when he really blossomed.
Western Bulldogs Being one of the shortest guys ever didn't phase him at all, he was determined to make it, and he did.
He kicked many of his goals when resting in the forward pocket.
He would rove to ruck greats John Schultz and Gary Dempsey.
In 1969 he was reported for belting Carlton's Ian Robertson because Robertson had belted one of the younger Footscray boys. (Robertson was born in Footscray and later played for the club). Georgie got off the charge but didn't receive any Brownlow Medal votes that day. That day he kicked 6 goals and was voted best-afield in all of the newspapers. That year Georgie came second on the Brownlow Medal by one vote.

In 1972 he went to play for Collingwood and gave them 41 games and 49 goals. He returned to the Western Oval as a selector, skills coach and committee member.

He spent a lot of time coaching Tony Liberatore who said that he was one of his biggest influences and gave him so much confidence.
