Tall wingman and utility player who was lightly framed very quick, agile and a good mark. Not afraid to mix it with the rough stuff either, said to have broken Melbourne's Robbie Flower's collar bone one day.
Remember a game against Geelong when Neil Cordy was given the job on Ablett. It was a season when Ablett was kicking everything from everywhere and generally starring. Cords wore him like a glove and he barely got a touch all game. ..
The only catch was the only touch the Great Man did get was an absolutely blinding pack mark in the goal square at the Geelong Rd end. That mark was replayed all season and still gets a Guernsey when those 'big mark' shows/videos come out.
The funny thing is that while Ablett was a mile in the air taking the mark just behind and below him was Neil Cordy not quite reaching to punch. Cordy thrashed Ablett that day..
Maybe didn't get along with the coach Malthouse as he went to Sydney. There he was a star player and played for many years. later became a TV football commentator. His brother Brian was a star Half back flanker for the Bulldogs and another brother also played. |
