Member Bulldogs' Team of the Century. Best and Fairest winner 1970, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976 and 1977. Brownlow Medal winner 1975. More Brownlow votes than any other player in the history of the count. Captain in 1971 and 1972. Victorian Captain 1972. State representative 22 occasions. All Australian. |
Tall ruckman, well built and expert at dishing off to the mobile small man. He was every fan's hero. A legend of the game. Survived bad burns to his legs in the Lara bushfires in 1969.
Probably the best player at marking the ball that there has ever been. Consistently took over 15 marks per game, sometimes into the 20's. He could take high marks, pack marks and contested marks. I have even seen him take marks like a cricketer takes a spectacular sideways diving slips catch.
He was a fair player and was adored and cherished and loved by all Bulldogs fans but he deserted the club to go to North Melbourne where he thought he may win a premiership.
Disappointed the fans terribly. Traded for Gary Cowton, John Moylan and Mark
Williams. Moylan was a back pocket player who gave us fairly good service.
Mark Williams who played a ripper for us towards the end of the season, then
I believe that his girlfriend wanted to go home to Tassie and we lost him.
Returned to the club on several occasions as ruck coach and mentor. Was also
Hawthorn's ruck coach. Still a favoured son of the club despite him going off to another club, such was his influence. |
