Midfielder with plenty of pace and muscle. Part of what was known as 'The Wog Squad', the others being Jose Romero and Tony Liberatore. Known affectionately as 'Dimma'. He had the occasional good game prior to 97:Very passionate about his game and was upset when he did not do well. 1997 and 1998 were wall-to-wall with very good, if not great games for the club, something that helped us attain our top ladder positions in those years. |

Able to carry the ball with speed taking several bounces as he goes. A hunched sort of running style. He was a team player. For a while there he got the 'BUZZ' treatment: Every time he got the ball people on mass would say 'Dimma' aloud. -Some unconscious level reaction to seeing him with the ball |

He almost got the chop until the coach Terry Wallace gave him an opportunity to prove himself one last time in a practice match. |

He retired at the end of 2003. Thought
about going to Carlton but decided on graceful retirement instead. Owns
several restaurants, one in Carlton and another in Royal Street East Perth
and a new one under way in Brisbane. Not only a great player, but a
fantastic person, Paul was never too busy to have a word to a supporter or
well wisher (including coming to his restaurant on Friday night for a
supporter get together). Will the Dimattina family keep the Medallion Club
seats that they have. His family were always there when Paul or his brother
(at Collingwood for a while) were playing but never there any other time.
Some of the best stories I heard (but not seen) about Dimma were actually
relating to what his parents did when watching from the stands. At times
they were pumped, at other times they just shook their heads. Once one of
them put hands on head, receiving a sharp nudge from the other in
retaliation! |
