'Hoppy', or 'Banana Legs' the bandy-legged Hopkins was one of the cleverest and most brilliant centremen in the history of the game. A feature of his play was the clever side-stepping and eel-like wriggling out of the crunches. He was a marvellous kick and once kicked a goal from near the centre circle at the Western Oval. He was deceptively quick and clever.

Footscray

His father, Con Hopkins was the curator at the Footscray oval and young Allan soon got to know every square inch of the ground, playing on it during the day and night and living within a stone's throw at night.
