1995 National Draft Choice #9 (traded from Adelaide for Kym
Koster) from Melbourne, Woodville |

He was flamboyant. had a younger talented brother Glen
who played many games for the West Coast Eagles. Three of the seven goals he got were in one match in 1996 against StKilda. |

Many fans think that he already had his best seasons
when he was at Melbourne and that he would not be a good draft choice. our
plans for draft day were revealed in the newspaper. Mark Kleiman's
recruiting artistry was at work. He must have been delirious in excitement.
He couldn't lose. Either way he was going to deliver us a high profile
player - Allen Jakovich who had already played his best footy or Groom who
only needed a restart. We were going to upstaged those big Pie and Bomber
boys in the process. |

After what was an accurate assessment about the
junior talent available it was decided that experienced players was the way
to go.
Realising that the Pies were also keen on Jako, the
Dogs granted Kym Koster his wish to return home to Adelaide which then
positioned their 1st pick one place ahead of the Pies. We then off loaded
our original 1st selection to land Brad Wira and Hugh Riemers. We planned to
select Jako however, if he wasn't still available, then we would sit there
quietly and select Chris Groom and pretend he was the player we were after
all along. Draft day went to plan and when we took Jako you could hear a cry
from the Pies table. Todd Curley, Mark West and Tony Campbell were drafted
behind Jako that year. |
