Nicknamed "Freddie". His younger days were his best. Teamed magnificently with
fellow rover Brian Royal to make the best combination in the competition.
Picked up numerous possessions. had great stamina. |

A left footer with blistering pace and undeniable
courage. He was a sensational player for us and it was a shame that we lost
him when the Crows came on board. I think Hawkins offered to step back from
the captaincy if it would mean that McGuinness would have stayed. He was
highly regarded by the players as a leader. Rumoured to be a bit of a ladies
man.

He was an absolute gun wasn't he. I loved the way he
would scoop the ball off the ground one handed at full speed.
The worst thing about McGuinness going was we didn't get anything for him.
If we had got a compensatory draft pick and been able to select a young
Matthew Lloyd the way Essendon did when Freo took Todd Ridley and Tony
Delaney then it would have easier to handle |
