Footscray

He was recruited sort of by accident when talent scout Ern Edwards went to recruit a rover who wasn't interested in coming down to the big smoke. So somebody said to not to be disheartened and try that big blonde kid over there.

Western Bulldogs   He was known as 'the gentle giant' and as being scrupulously fair.

In his first game as a 19 year old he was just about knocked out by Collingwood's Barry Harrison within the first few seconds of the game. But he got up to finish the game well.

He was a great tap ruckman with strength and durability to last. During the game he would drop a kick behind the play and if he didn't mark the on-coming ball he'd knock it down to the waiting rover.

He was voted by many top ruckmen as their toughest opponent. He would rest in the back pocket.

He retired at the age of 29, through nagging injuries.
