Western Bulldogs Was a great player, was big, tough and agile. Could take a great grab. Played in the ruck, centre-half-forward and centre-half-back. It was at centre-half-back where he played most games. A memory sticks out of Ted Whitten kissing him on the cheek after Welsh's best on ground and game-winning performance against Richmond one day.  He could also pick up the ball and run, something that he did frequently. One day he got caught by Hawthorn's champion full-forward Peter Hudson on the wing after running the ball out from the back pocket. Hudson said later that he was just about to give up, having run out of puff.

He had all of the attributes to be a super-star, a fantastic mark, only an awkward kicking style seemed a bit off-putting. Maybe more exertion on the field would have pushed him up that last notch. Maybe it was due to that unfortunate diseased leg in his late teens.

Welsh was an aggressive player that sometimes led to a report and the tribunal. He had a beard and at times huge mop of reddish-brown curly hair, he looked frightening, reminded me of images of the wild-white-man of Badu.
